An old classic game that reworks for the new generation.

Wonder Boy, as you might have guessed already.
Stealing the secret sword at every opportunity, the world is at war with the evil Sorceress. The King's four noble Knights go into battle against her and her army, and the village that they are assigned to protect, after the King allows them to take the sword back from Princess Yurnah, who foolishly did not protect it as she should have. After making peace with the forces of good and capturing the village, the four turn their attention to the next village, from which Princess Yurnah once again did not return the sword. The King instructs his four Knights to capture the Princess, but the four become lost as they journey across the land, and wonder about the sword in the village where they had already been sent. After two days of wandering, they encounter a dwarf, who advises them that Princess Yurnah was captured by the evil Sorceress on the next village.
The Knights go to the next village, which, as it turns out, is the one that they had been sent to the previous day. Along the way to the village, the Knights have to fight off boars, rats, spiders, and enemies with dogs. They find the village with most of its inhabitants killed off, and during their search for the Princess, a sword is stolen from them, which the young thief claims to be a present for a village girl named Mii. On a hill overlooking the village, the knights see a woman stealing Mii's father's sword, then the King's sword and Yurnah's sword. Later on, they see the King's sword, but the house it was in is burnt, and when they return to it, it is gone.
During their investigation, the knights end up fighting off an ambush from dogs and rats. It is then that they find a man with a beard named Blitz, who tells them that the Sorceresses have twice stolen the King's sword from the same village, and that they have been controlling the battle between good and evil all along. The man further explains that the new Sorceress is even more evil than the last one, as she is a part of a foreign dragon, which is hinted to be the main antagonist of the story, who has sought the power of the sword for their own means. The Wonder Boy series always appeals to me. The Dragon's Trap nails the series with its brutal hard action combat, very tight gameplay, and above all the most faithful and original setting I've seen from a video game in years.…Expand
Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap doesn't quite make up for the Game Boy Advance wonder I didn't get to play back in 2005. While the game is extremely well done it is not "the best Wonder Boy game in ages." It is a good game. But this is clearly a portable game for DS users, with a highly polished look. It does not hold a candle to Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, whichWonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap doesn't quite make up for the Game Boy Advance wonder I didn't get to play back in 2005. While the game is extremely well done it is not "the best Wonder Boy game in ages." It is a good game. But this is clearly a portable game for DS users, with a highly polished look. The gameplay in this game is pretty much perfect. Everything is simple and focused, with some new elements that blend very well. The way in which the game play is approached and presented makes it perfect for the DS. In short, it's really good.
This game captures the spirit of the earlier games in the series and expands the lore without bogging down with new characters and settings.
I give it an 8 out of 10 because it is one of those games that feels like an obvious failure when looking at its level of polish, but once you get past that and get into the action it's a blast.
