A group of Milton municipal workers have been denied the ability to access the Internet using co-worker's unshared computers.
Workers can now access the Internet through their personal computer, but they must log in and log out each time they access the Internet using a co-worker's computer.
"Because co-workers generally do not want to inconvenience other co-workers, they are willing to accept such limitations in exchange for having access to an Internet connection, and that is exactly what these workers are doing," the union says.
The city is required by law to maintain a computer network but has been denied permission to share its own network with any co-workers.
The workers are now weighing options to get a computer in their office.
NDP city councillor Micheal Boudreau and Liberal leader Karla MacFarlane blame the problem on the city's bylaw.
"It's been terribly interpreted. The bylaw seems to give the city the power to dictate your communications, your Internet and your computer use outside of that," MacFarlane said.
The city maintains the web portal is to make sure workers use appropriate technology and access age-appropriate content.
Boudreau says the bylaw does not give the city the right to provide any sort of Internet access, regardless of the benefits to the worker, the worker's coworkers and the city.
"It's an unenforceable bylaw. This is not the way to approach a bylaw. If you're going to go after a bylaw you have to offer compensation," Boudreau said.
"If you are going to advocate that not all city employees can have access to the Internet, you have to pay back every single one of the thousand dollars."
The cost to make access workable for all Milton workers will be at least $120,000.Q:
