Al Jazeera now officially plans to launch TV channels in Turkey and the Arab world, with a paywall to access programming.
The broadcaster — founded by the late Sheikh Muhammed al-Jaber Al-Sabah, an emir of Kuwait, who sold it to the wealthy Qatari royal family — has been trying to expand in the Arab world. Al Jazeera's current Arabic-language service is blocked in most of the Middle East.
“After a very successful first year, we are very excited to open up our service in Turkey and the Arab region and are looking forward to providing cutting-edge, first-class global and regional news and information,” a news release from Al Jazeera said.
Al Jazeera plans to begin broadcasting “two to three hours of news and information per day in Turkish and Arabic,” according to the release.
The new networks will be available to international viewers for a fee.
“To access Al Jazeera programming in Turkey, viewers in Turkey must subscribe to Al Jazeera's Turkey offering,” according to the release. “To access Al Jazeera's programming in the Arab region, viewers in the Arab region must subscribe to Al Jazeera's Arab offering.”
In addition to a paywall for their news and entertainment programming, Al Jazeera is planning to offer “the latest technology to improve the production of their news and other programming, such as a high definition network, cloud-based editing and production facilities, multi-camera news, HD cameras and high resolution video editing systems,” the release said.
