Category:University of Paris facultyWASHINGTON — The Pentagon announced Tuesday that they are requiring female soldiers who undergo a gynecological exam, including a pap smear, as part of the military’s physical fitness test to weigh themselves.
The mandatory test is part of the annual physical fitness test (APFT) that all enlisted male and female service members must take twice a year, and is one of the more invasive forms of physical testing.
The test requires female soldiers to first strip down to their underwear, undergo a clinical exam, then have a pap smear. The exam includes a gynecological exam that includes a thorough genital exam.
Only female soldiers are required to undergo the gynecological exam as part of the APFT, and the procedure comes at the beginning of the process, before fitness standards are even established.
As with all of the APFT requirements, the exam is given by a private physician, and no records are kept by the military.

The test only applies to enlisted soldiers, and is mandatory for women. All women must take the test, regardless of whether they had given birth within the last 12 months.
Pentagon spokesperson Lt. Col. Myles Caggins III explained to Army Times that the requirement is needed to ensure proper female soldier standards.
“There’s no other reason to do it than a bunch of soldiers and women telling us ‘I think I’ve got a problem,'” he said. “It’s been a problem for as long as we’ve had women in the military.”
