The Raga Mahajati Keemara is one of the many traditional classical dance forms of Bali. The name of the Raga Mahajati Keemara comes from the Sanskrit phrase meaning "Great Dance of Bali" and it is usually performed in performances as a form of cultural expression. It has been recorded that the dance had been performed for many generations before now, as a part of the rich cultural heritage of Bali. The style of the dance has been recognized by the government of Indonesia since 1959 as an art form that is of national importance and as a result, has been designated as an art form that is of national importance and has been recognized by the government of Indonesia as a key form of cultural expression.
In Bali, the Raga Mahajati Keemara is often referred to by the Balinese name or nickname, The Dance of Bali, and it is often performed in festivals and ceremonies such as Pasaran, Sayuk Karya, Subak and Karana Luhur.
In the small village of Gubu on the slopes of Mount Agung, the traditional dance theatre, Kura Kesenggeng (meaning the ‘ballet’s kitchen’), has been used for hosting the most traditional dance performances for over 80 years. At this theatre, more than 20 traditional dance performances have been performed.
There is a pavilion called Lumbung Kalibiru that has been used for performing Raga Mahajati Keemara, particularly for the cultural expression and celebration of the soul of the Raga. Raga Mahajati Keemara's main dance performer is Sukasudara Subianto, a famous Balinese opera singer from the very village of Gubu.
Sukasudara Subianto was born in 1957 and grew up in Gubu, and he is the main artistic choreographer of the Raga Mahajati Keemara. Subianto has performed with the traditional dance form for many years in many festivals and ceremonies in Bali. This is the reason why Subianto is regarded as one of the greatest dance performers in Bali. For many years, Subianto has been invited to perform in Japan as a guest artist and is often asked to be a guest artist in the popular Japanese TV show, Musical Nippon.
