Update 5:27 p.m. EDT Sept. 14: Tropical Storm Nicholas continued to slog across southern Texas late Monday afternoon, dumping torrential rains and prompting widespread flash flood warnings for waterlogged neighbor, Louisiana.

According to the National Weather Service’s 5 p.m. EDT advisory, Nicholas was located about 50 miles east of Houston and about 45 miles west-southwest of Port Arthur, Texas. Although the storm continued to maintain maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, Nicholas is forecast to be downgraded to a tropical depression Tuesday evening and a remnant sometime Wednesday or possibly early Thursday.

Meanwhile, Nicholas’ forward motion to the east-northeast has decreased to only about 6 mph, meaning portions of southern and central Louisiana, southern Mississippi, the southern tip of Alabama and the western Florida panhandle could receive between 5 and 10 inches of additional rain through early Friday, the NHC stated.

Isolated rainfall totals of 20 inches are also possible from southern Louisiana to the far western Florida Panhandle.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for High Island, Texas to Cameron, Louisiana.
