The story, which explores various shades of emotions, is sweet, simple and worth every bit of the Rs. 2.25 crore budget. It was directed by Ekk Deewana Tha and Vicky Lalwani, produced by Anurag Kashyap and Karan Johar’s Red Chillies. It was also screened at the Indian Panorama of the International Film Festival of India.
The film’s writer, Hemant Anand, whose writing credits include Jab We Met, The Dirty Picture and 3 Idiots, has said that the idea came from a character based on his father. “I didn’t want to set it in India. We couldn’t use a very clichéd idea of old people falling in love and there has to be some romantic element in it. But I had already written the script and I was trying to decide where to take it from. I started thinking about my father, as I always do, and I realized that I couldn’t just write about him. That’s when I thought I’d make a film about his character who is still around and is about to celebrate his 64th birthday. He had lost his wife, a few years before, and that was what started this sequence of events.”
Anand went on to explain how he came to find his father, and how his love for writing and his daily interactions with his father affected his writing. “My father was a writer. He had written a short story and given it to me at an early age. It was a lovely story but he didn’t know how to market it or publish it. I don’t know if he ever really got over that sense of failure. I am sure this is why he is the way he is. I always have his writings with me. He used to write every day.
