Personal Historian includes many great features that make it a great program for genealogists.  If you have a background in genealogy, it will be easy for you to get acquainted with Personal Historian.
There are two main components to writing a Personal Historian file: 
1. Creating a Timeline
2. Writing the story
I'll focus on the second component first.  To create a new chapter or a new event, start by clicking the plus button in the bottom left corner.  This will bring up a new window with a list of possible categories for your new event.  You can add a new category by entering a name in the text box that appears.  You can click the triangle next to the new category name to delete it.  After you have selected a category, use the dropdown menu to define your event.  To enter the event content, click the big pencil icon.  This will bring up a text editor that you can use to add text that you will eventually export as your final document.
For example, suppose you have a new event.  To start, you would select 'Current Health' as the category.  Then you would add 'Broke My Jaw' as the event.  
Once you are done writing the event, you can use the dropdown menu to select that event category.  The event will show up on a timeline as a distinct event in the timeline window.  You can click it and add to it if necessary.  Then, you can select the category dropdown to determine how the event is categorized for further sorting.
