AutoCAD LT is an entry-level version of AutoCAD, suitable for beginners and offering most basic drafting and modeling features. It is available as a free download for non-commercial use or on a subscription basis for commercial use.

The user interface
The interface is arranged into different panels, or "tabs". The currently selected tab is indicated in the top right corner of the screen.
In order to move to another tab, click on the corresponding tab title (top right corner). Alternatively, a mouse click on the tab title will also switch to that tab.
To close the currently selected tab, click on the small triangle icon (top right corner). Alternatively, select File | Exit to close the application.
The design workspace
At the very bottom of the interface, there is a toolbar containing icons and menus which are used for most of the drawing operations.
In order to access the toolbar, click on the Toolbar icon (bottom right corner). Alternatively, a mouse click on the toolbar icon will also show the menu.
To move to the next toolbar, click on the small arrow icon (bottom right corner). Alternatively, a mouse click on the toolbar icon will move to the next toolbar.
Several shortcut icons can be found in the design workspace to access certain features. They are described below.
Borders: Select the 3-D Borders icon (top right corner) to toggle on/off the 3-D view of the drawing.
3D: Toggle 3D view on/off. Select the 3D View icon (top right corner) to toggle between AutoCAD's 2D view and the 3D view.
Undo/Redo: Click on the Undo icon (top left corner) to access the Undo/Redo window. Toggle the first/last command to access the Undo/Redo window in reverse order.
Pan/Zoom: Click on the Zoom icon (top left corner) to access the Pan/Zoom window. Click on the arrow icon (top left corner) to toggle between Zoom and Pan.
Grid: Click on the Grid icon (top left corner) to access the Grid Options window. Toggle the Grid Off/On/Show to access the Grid Options window. Select the Grid Color to change the color of the grid.

Formats 
AutoCAD was the first CAD program to support the DWG format for 2D drawings. Early versions of AutoCAD also had capabilities for designing for 2D plotters and the paper-based.
AutoCAD's native drawing system was designed to support the drawing of arbitrary shapes as well as modeling features. However, because of the growing use of computer-aided design (CAD) by architects, it was clear that the drawing commands were poorly designed. This led to the introduction of a structured drawing system for design purposes. Beginning with AutoCAD 2000 (released in June 1997), the system for 2D drafting was converted to a structured system called the 2D structured drafting system (2D Structured Drafting). In contrast to the 2D drafting system (2D Drafting), the system was also able to support the structural information (horizontal and vertical lines, axes, etc.) for 3D drawings (conforming to the Drafting Standard of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers). This approach made it easier to design with, and reduced the need to redraw with separate 2D drafting commands.
The 3D drawing system was in a separate system called the 3D structured drawing system, 2D-DRAFTING, designed to support 2D drafting and 3D design. It was first available in AutoCAD 2000 (released in June 1997) and was described in more detail in the AutoCAD® User's Guide.
In addition to the 2D and 3D structured systems, AutoCAD supports external reference information. External reference data (or external references) is any data that is embedded into the model in a format such as XML, PDF or HTML.
The DWG native format for 2D drawings was supported until AutoCAD 2009, when it was replaced by the newer DWF format. AutoCAD 2010 discontinued support for DWG and for the 2009 version of AutoCAD, and the native DWF format is now the default. DXF is the native file format for AutoCAD, as opposed to the DWG format, which is the native format for AutoCAD R14 and earlier, and the native format for AutoCAD LT.
