Category:Nadine Scherr albumsAn E.coli strain linked to rare and severe E.coli infections has been identified for the first time in North America, according to a new study from researchers in Canada and the U.S.
Infectious disease experts have long warned of the rise of antimicrobial resistant strains of E.coli, including some that cause severe kidney damage and bloody diarrhoea that can be fatal.
"This is the first report of a patient in the U.S. with E.coli that has acquired a Vero Beach type, which is one of the rarest E.coli serotypes, causing severe infections," said co-author Dr. Aneesh A. Sahdeo, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
"This has been a long time coming," said co-author Dr. Peter Sebel, Associate Professor of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of British Columbia. "It's part of the superbugs problem that everyone was warned about."
The research was published Wednesday in the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.
"When we talk about the most severe, rapidly progressing E.coli infections, we're talking about a very small percentage of patients," said Dr. Sebel. "In patients who are diagnosed with this type of E.coli infection, their chances of dying are over 50 percent."
The researchers tracked a patient with E.coli O25b:H4-ST131 who first sought treatment in May of 2013. The new strain, like other E.coli ST131 strains, is known to cause life-threatening infections.
"As part of his E.coli infection, the patient had two blood cultures that grew E.coli ST131 with a similar virulence gene composition and indistinguishable DNA microarray patterns as previously described E.coli ST131, but different PFGE patterns," said co-author Dr. Roberto Ferreira, microbiologist at Hospital das Clínicas, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.
"The patient received an aggressive treatment regimen, which included a combination of intravenous antimicrobial therapy and multiple surgical debridements for persistent wound infections. Unfortunately, despite this intensive treatment, the patient died
