Progesterone levels in dromedary camel milk {#S0023}

No progesterone was detected in the milk of the three camels.
Microscopy of the reproductive tract {#S0024}
------------------------------------
The genital tract of three camels was found to be normal. Glandular and lobular mammary glands were apparent in the inguinal region and mammary glands were also observed in the abdominal region. Moreover, lumenal epithelium was squamous epithelium. The ovaries contained oocytes and primordial follicles. The uteri of the three camels had 8, 6 and 9 mm in diameter and cystic changes were observed in the endometrial lining of the uterus. The cervix of all three camels had an irregular surface. A rudimentary clitoris and urethra were present in all three camels (Figure [3](#F0003){ref-type="fig"}).

Performing slaughter on dromedary camels {#S0025}
----------------------------------------
Twenty male camels were bought from a local farm. All of them had nothing on their foreheads and all had free-range access to water. Based on the information provided by the farm owner, it was assumed that the camels were healthy when bought. This was verified by their clinical examination and no abnormalities were found. The male camels were transported to the laboratory for examination. The male camels were sedated by the following protocol: (a) an intramuscular injection of 0.04 mg/kg of ketamine, followed by (b) an injection of 0.3 mg/kg of morphine intramuscularly, followed by (c) the inhalation of 4 mg/kg of thiopental. After sedation, the male camels were slaughtered by severing the carotid and jugular veins.
