Next years The Batman will signal yet another franchise refresh for Batman. Weve seen the vigilante as a colorful crusader, the darkest knight, Batfleck, and even as a baby bat. But The Batman promises to bring something new: a glimpse at Batman at the beginning of his career, facing off against noirish villains. While the success of this new take is not yet assured, a new leak suggests there are already plans for a sequel — and its far darker than anything weve seen before. The final moments of The Batman will deal with the Riddler flooding Gotham, according to a leak posted to the DCEULeaks subreddit by a source named ViewerAnon. (In the past, this leaker has also alleged that the Illuminati will appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and that The Matrix 4 will see a wildly mixed response, though their credibility is highly questionable.) I wouldnt call it apocalyptic, but the third act does deal with Riddler setting off bombs in Gotham harbors to flood the city, the leak reads. But one image, in particular, shows a new glimpse at the classic villain The Riddler, portrayed in The Batman by Paul Dano. While weve seen The Riddler in the trailer for The Batman, he was always cloaked in shadow. This leaked calendar shows his costume in detail, and its way more intimidating than we thought. The image shows the Riddler wearing a leather hood with a panel over the mouth. Many have equated this look to fetish gear, but theres actually a far more terrifying inspiration for this evil leather get-up: the Zodiac Killer. While Shepard succumbed to her injuries, Hartnell survived to give a detailed account of the attacker: a man wearing a black executioner-style hood with a crosshair symbol on it and sunglasses over the eye holes. This description also closely matches Paul Danos Riddler, and the leaked image shows a crosshair symbol almost identical to Zodiacs calling card. The only difference is a question mark in the middle. The Zodiac Killer, the most famous unidentified serial killer, may seem like a strange inspiration for the Riddler, a villain best known for his technicolor costume and manic personality. But in a way, the Zodiac Killer is the closest thing the real world has to a Riddler. The Riddler in The Batman sends his own cryptograms, but theyre not nearly as complex. One shown in a split-second shot in the trailer has already been solved. So while this villain may take his cues from the Zodiac, hes no match for Batman or the puzzle enthusiasts of the Internet. Considering the Zodiacs long history as one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in our country, it makes perfect sense for The Batman to be influenced by him. We know the film will take after the film noir genre, and one of the greatest modern examples of that tone is none other than Zodiac, the 2007 film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo. While the Zodiacs identity will remain cloaked in mystery, his actions are set to be immortalized on screen for eternity. The Batman premieres March 4, 2022 in theaters.
