Jorja Smith is a 19-year-old American rapper, singer, and songwriter. She was born and raised in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Her father is Trinidadian, and her mother is of African-American and Irish descent. Smith first became known as the rapper Jorja, or Jay Cee, with the song “”Ski Mask” in 2013, which was produced by Kanye West. During this time, she was studying Social Science and Business at Marymount Manhattan College.
In 2014, she began to independently release music and received media attention for her performances. “That Thing” (2014) was the song that launched her, landing on the U.S. Billboard R&B/Hip Hop chart. In 2015, Jorja signed with RCA and released the single “Make it Better,” which featured Kanye West. “Turn Me Up,” a song from her first mixtape Never Be Alone, was the most downloaded song of 2015 and earned Smith the title of Song of the Year on DJBooth. Later that year, Smith released her debut mixtape Project 11, which featured production by Dom Kennedy, Ty Dolla $ign, and Kanye West.
In 2017, Smith released her second mixtape, Indigoism, which featured production by Kanye West, A$AP Rocky, and DJ Dahi, and was described as “a sonic sequel to 2014’s [Project 11].” In 2018, Smith released her debut EP, a seven-track project. The EP, titled Project 11, was released on August 23, 2018.
