With the deployment of its HFC network, Vodafone is keen to offer the option of 3G data services through its network as well as offering the option of 4G.
For the past two months Vodafone has been quietly testing a major upgrade to its HFC network. This included the testing of a 1.5Gbps HFC HD channel as well as the introduction of the Red D3-BEG coax interface which had been in development for the past few years.
When launched, Vodafone's HFC network will include a total of 60 cities, covering 95 percent of the UK population. While the network is designed for HFC services, Vodafone has now announced that it will start offering a 3G data service. The 3G service from Vodafone will be offered at data speeds of 300Mbps, and will be offered to new customers on a rolling basis, with the rollout of the service starting July 1st.
Vodafone's CEO Vittorio Colao stated that he is satisfied with the progress of the HFC network, and expects that it will see capacity increases to meet additional demand for mobile services once the network is fully rolled out.
"As you know, HFC is a network with a very long journey and there is still a lot of work to be done. By the end of this year, we expect to be in 80% of our target markets and fully-deployed by the end of 2011," Colao said.
"HFC is an important initiative for us. It will bring capacity and speed-up. It will also help us to keep reaching our previous agreement with the BBC to provide at least 3Mbps of speed at peak hours for services such as BBC iPlayer."
