Original and Release History
Autodesk introduced AutoCAD on a diskette for the Apple II in 1982. One of the main advantages was to allow CAD operators to work simultaneously at a number of terminals and to be able to move drawings between terminals. In 1982, only the Apple II could display objects at a resolution higher than 72 dots per inch (dpi). The Apple II could not process objects larger than 1024×768.
In 1985, the 256K Apple II (AVR) with a 10-MHz Motorola 68020 CPU replaced the Apple II Plus. It is the first version of AutoCAD to have a resolution of 1200 dpi.
In 1986, the Apple IIGS and the Apple IIc were introduced. The Apple IIGS has a Motorola 68030 CPU and supports 15-bit color graphics (24-bit color became a standard in 1992). The Apple IIc has an 8088 CPU and a 4-MHz Intel 80C51 CPU. The Apple IIc does not support color graphics. The 1200 dpi resolution and 256K (255K used for memory) became the standard resolution of AutoCAD.
In 1988, the Apple IIe became the standard computer used in the AutoCAD workspace. By the end of that year, the Apple II, the IIc, the IIGS and the IIe were discontinued.

Each major AutoCAD release has a distinct version numbering system. The AutoLISP version number differs slightly for each release as it is used for internal AutoLISP release levels.
Autodesk discontinued development of AutoCAD for Mac OS, and the MFC for Mac OS for AutoCAD 2008, stating that it had not been profitable. This was criticized as Microsoft could have charged more for Windows and Office. Mac OS is now only supported for the more recent AutoCAD releases.
In 2009, Autodesk announced it would not be releasing a new version of AutoCAD for Windows 7.  Version 20 of AutoCAD was released for Microsoft Windows platforms, supporting Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2.  This update is backward compatible to Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000.
 Version 2010 was the first to use 64-bit development, and auto-detect all installed Windows versions from 32-bit to 64-bit, including Windows 7.
It is the most popular version, released for Windows only (no Mac OS), and also the first to use 64-bit development.  It has been available for over a decade.  In February 2011, Autodesk announced it would support release of new versions for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, but would no longer support Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. A Mac version, released in April 2011, supports release of new versions for Mac OS 10.5.
Version 2012 introduced a major overhaul in the UI (known as the "New Schematic" style), introduction of XREF (now "Web 2D", which is the web-enabled 2D Schematic View), as well as a substantial architecture redesign.
Version 2013 introduced support for the Windows 8 UI, which included additional features such as the Ribbon Bar.
Version 2014 introduced support for 64-bit Windows, release of the next-generation Windows 10 UI, and the "New Schematic" UI, which was based on the Windows 10 UI.
Version 2015 introduced a more flat, modern design to the UI, and introduced several new features, including an integrated mobile app called AutoCAD 360 Mobile.
