How do I construct SQL that joins two tables to return the earliest value for a given column?
I have two tables that I need to join on in order to find the earliest value of a given column.  If the column is the same, it should return a NULL value instead.
For instance, the query should return the earliest value of the value column, or if it is NULL, then it should return the earliest value of the status column.
table: serial
value | status
1     | 2
2     | 1
3     | 3
4     | 2
5     | 3
table: value
serial | value
1      | 1
2      | 2
3      | 3
4      | 4
Desired output:
serial | value | status
1      | 1     | 2
2      | 2     | 1
3      | 3     | 3
4      | 4     | 2
5      | NULL  | 3
I have tried inner joins and left joins, but I can't seem to get the result I am looking for.
