In this interview, we spoke with composer Bill Ferris about composing TOTEM for the world premiere in Las Vegas and the making of the score.
Bill Ferris: When did you first come across the world of Cirque du Soleil?
Guy Dubuc: Well, I was a drum major in a marching band back in my college days in the 1990s, and I saw a poster of TOTEM on the wall. It was playing in San Francisco, and I saw the poster and it was amazing. I mean, I could not believe it. It's one of those moments in your life when you just know there's something special about you and your life and you know this moment is going to be big. I came back and I decided I was going to become a percussionist for Cirque du Soleil. I wanted to be in the city that I'd heard the poster and I could go to the show. It was special.
Bill Ferris: How do you first come up with an idea for a score?
Guy Dubuc: Oh, well I always think of the score first and the choreography last. The first thing I do is find music and try and find what the choreographer is looking for. If I can't find what they're looking for, then I'll do my own idea. But, yeah, it's pretty much always the other way around.
Bill Ferris: How did you find the songs in the first place?
Guy Dubuc: Well, there are a couple of guys who actually work with Cirque du Soleil, and they have a whole network, and they've got a database that they have access to, and the database has all the songs that Cirque du Soleil has used, and a few I've written myself. They're little bits and pieces that I have, and I put them all together and I kind of think of the overall thematics, and I think what I've found for this one is that it really is about a journey. It's a journey from the beginning of the world, to the origins, and then to the civilizations that exist, to the modern times. It's a journey from humanism to science. It's a story about the advancement of science and the human understanding, and the way we were and are. It's a journey from human beings to human beings, to the natural forces that we create, and we also get to see
