Recognizing some of the major features of Photoshop
Photoshop offers many levels of complexity, with numerous options and controls to choose from. If you plan to take advantage of Photoshop's full features, you'll need to have some basic knowledge of Photoshop's interface.
In this section, I outline the most important aspects of Photoshop's interface that anyone who wants to get the most out of Photoshop needs to understand.
The Basic View
The Photoshop interface you use to create and modify images consists of multiple windows. The following sections walk you through the various windows and show you what you can do with them.
Figure 5-1 shows a simple layered image, created in Photoshop CS5, that consists of only a background layer, a logo layer, and a text layer.
Photos can have layers in their layers palette, as shown in Figure 5-1, so layer instructions such as "Hide" and "Make Opaque" might be words you're familiar with.
Each layer can have its own guides, which are like a ruler to tell you the edges of the layer.

Whenever you use any of Photoshop's commands, they first appear in a dialog box where you can enter the command, type an explanation, or click the button on the dialog box itself to close it and apply the command.
Using the Layers Palette
You can see the layers palette at the bottom of the workspace, as shown in Figure 5-2, and your primary means of working on layers is the Palette. You open the Palette with the Window menu command.

The layers palette contains all the layers in your current image, ordered by layer name. You can add, delete, and modify layers. You can also apply special attributes, such as masks, effects, and a number of other options that affect all layers, which are explained later in this chapter.
Each layer can have its own guides, which are useful for telling the edges of the layer. Also, each layer can have its own color and opacity settings, which you can edit in the Layers panel.
