AutoCAD was originally developed by Silicon Graphics Inc. for their Silicon Graphics workstations.
Development for the first version started in 1980, under a contract with Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), working with Dave Stuart (then a PhD student at MIT) and Clifford Brown, and on the DEC Rainbow computer. They worked on it in DEC's Cambridge Research Labs for eight months, in November and December 1980, and then joined DEC in December 1980, where they worked for another eight months. The first release of the program was in March 1981, and was released to a limited number of users in April. The original naming convention was by Dave Stuart as DxD, but this was soon changed to AutoCAD by K. Sean Gallagher, after a project manager at SGI mentioned that the naming conventions for the DEC was DxD. The name of the first release in April 1981 was "Version 1.0" as announced in Steve Jobs's keynote address at the January 1981 MacWorld Expo.
The first public demonstration of AutoCAD was at the May 1981 SIGGRAPH conference.
At the time of its first public release, AutoCAD was the only graphics system available on Macs. By the end of 1981, when the Amiga 1000 was introduced, AutoCAD had become the main graphics package for Amiga users. As the Amiga computer was not primarily a business computer, DEC had little interest in selling AutoCAD for the Amiga. An improved version for the Amiga was released in 1987.
When Workbench 3.0 was first released, AutoCAD was not available for the Windows platform. However, the first Windows version of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT (Autodesk Layout Tools) was released in 1989, for use in desktop publishing. The last versions of AutoCAD for Windows were released in 1994.
In 1998, a group of programmers in Canada set up a platform called ARX (Autodesk Runtime Extensions) for developing add-ons to AutoCAD for use on Mac OS X. Autodesk finally released AutoCAD LT as an open-source cross-platform program in 2001.
