AutoCAD was first launched as 2D drafting and design software in 1981 by Autodesk on microcomputers. At the time, graphics were typically done by inserting a drawing board and a hard pencil or soft pencil into a computer terminal, making use of a mouse-driven pointing device for drawing (click and drag). The first AutoCAD released for personal computers included a hardboard surface as a drawing board, but the program would instead use a traditional piece of paper for drawing. Although this first version of AutoCAD used pen and paper, it also used lines, arcs, and circles to create a drawing.

The first version of AutoCAD was released on December 8, 1982 as Autodesk Software Development's Company Software, sold as the MicroAutoCAD 3D for $5,500 per copy.[1] Since the program was created using a DEC PDP-11 system, it could only be used on microcomputers running the MACROS operating system. This version also required a stylus, which was commonly used to write in pen and paper, and the software was released in two versions.
Developed at a time when personal computers were extremely slow and mainframe computers were used for CAD, MicroAutoCAD 3D included a development system that required a user to purchase a new system at a cost of $21,500.[2] Unlike some other CAD programs, AutoCAD did not have a programmable mouse, but instead required the user to connect a model airplane to a drawing board with a magnetic pen.[3] Although the drawing board was normally a hardboard surface, the first version of AutoCAD used a piece of paper for this purpose, and could also be connected to a plotting board.[4]
