Synopsis
President Hainan of the Republic of China (Li Hongzhang) is on his way to a meeting in Beijing when a coup d'état occurs at the Nationalist government's headquarters in Nanjing. President Hainan arrives in Beijing in time to witness the coup, and goes on to a meeting with Vice President Li Lisan. During the meeting, a radio broadcast with military support is broadcast with Li Lisan's support. However, the military coup is defeated by pro-Japanese and Kuomintang (KMT) military personnel, who enter the capital city. It is the aim of the coup to capture the former Japanese ambassador, Ishiwara Kanji, as a potential replacement for the pro-Japanese ambassador, Waki Yuzuru.
After the coup has ended, the new pro-Japanese leaders declare that Japan will continue to make war on China. They show their allegiance to Japan by a renewed version of the Arrow Cross Party's official flag. In the turmoil, Li Hongzhang flees Beijing. The coup leaders subsequently post placards declaring the country an ally of Japan. As President Hainan flees to Tianjin, he is confronted by the new authorities, and they attempt to assassinate him by putting a bullet into his chest.
However, President Hainan survives the assassination attempt. His bullet wound is never fully healed, and his wife makes it her mission to treat him in the future.
Background and history
Ishiwara Kanji (1876–1956), was a career diplomat who served as Japan's first Ambassador to China. After the First World War, he was the Japanese ambassador to the Republic of China (ROC) from 1925 to 1931. He had been posted to the ROC as the Japanese government's point-man on the Hundred Regiments Offensive. The Japanese government, and in particular Prime Minister Terauchi Masatake, were concerned that pro-Western forces, which included the so-called Constitutional Protection Movement, would overthrow the Chinese government. After the Japanese military took control of Nanjing on December 8, 1931, Ambassador Ishiwara gathered a small group of political leaders in his residence to discuss his country's future policies towards the ROC, which he believed would not be very friendly.
