2.1 Brief history of Ethics in Engineering {#sec2-1572164317690473}

Engineering is a profession that requires the judgement and discretion of the practitioner to balance conflicting ethical values. Engineering is a profession that continues to struggle with the notion of ethics and ethical behaviour. In a time and a society that have accepted the use of technology and its impact on society, it was in the 1970s that the International Federation of Engineering Ethics (IFEE) was formed by the engineers, to 'address engineering ethical issues and to promote engineering as a profession in which ethical values are an integral part of engineering practice'.^[@bibr1-1572164317690473]^ It was not until the late 1970s that the first Codes of Ethics were drawn up by engineering associations in the US, the UK and Australia.^[@bibr2-1572164317690473][@bibr3-1572164317690473]--[@bibr4-1572164317690473]^
It is in the early 1980s that we see the first professional codes of ethics for engineering practitioners. The first set of professional codes were written in the US and was developed by the Society of Professional Engineers (SOPE). The code of ethics was developed with the intention of 'establishing a common bond of respect among members' and to 'provide guidance for the conduct of engineers and engineers' and to promote professionalism in engineering practice.^[@bibr5-1572164317690473]^ This code of ethics was developed with the assumption that 'because of their technical competence, most engineering practice involves some type of ethical decision making'.^[@bibr5-1572164317690473]^ The ethical issues that engineers face include: the duty to report any conflict of interest to the appropriate governing authority, the proper relationship between professional engineers and management in the engineering workplace, the allocation of resources in an engineering organisation, the acceptance of training, education and ongoing training, 3125841983
