NetCPS is a performance measuring tool for TCP / IP networking. NetCPS can work on UNIX, UnixWare, VMS, Linux, Alpha, and Windows platforms. NetCPS is independent of the transport protocol used. NetCPS is free software, and the output is a stream of data, so no calculations or formatting is done on the data.
NetCPS can be very helpful for troubleshooting, and it can be used in performance testing. NetCPS simulates several hundred gigabits per second on a standard 10 Mbit/s link with no other activity. For a test, set up two PCs with their ports switched. NetCPS will run on one machine and it will measure the speed at the other. This will tell you the speed of your local network and compare it to whatever speed you expect to be able to receive data from a remote host.
In addition, NetCPS can be used to measure performance on a single host, or between two hosts.
NetCPS reports link speed, and between-host speed (IPX/NetBEUI only at present), in kilobits/second, including the following:
RX/TX rate in bytes/sec at the receiving host
Packets/sec at the receiving host
Packets/sec at the sending host
Roundtrip time in ms
Packets per second at the sending host
Bits per second at the sending host
DNS Resolution time in ms
There are no hard limits on how high the link speed can be, but there are practical limits of OS resources and applications on both the sending and the receiving host. To test over a much wider link, there is a utility called gigabitEthernetCPS that will use several gigabit ethernet links as well as an X.25 link to transfer gigabits per second.
NetCPS was designed to be used in the following way:
Start one machine running NetCPS, and run another machine on the same network.
Open a terminal on the machine that runs NetCPS, and see what speed you can get on the network.
Switch the network cables around, and see if your measured speed is the same.
If you have a network switch, test on other machines than the ones you are on now.

NetCPS is a multi-platform application and runs on just about any
operating system, as long as there is a TCP/IP stack, and someone has
modified the link and protocol headers to use the link with the host
computer, and has made a copy of the packet stream.
NetCPS is designed to be able to measure the real communication
capabilities of TCP/IP. By "real" we mean it is measuring the
communication ability of the TCP/IP stack, and not measuring the
communicating application.
The application does not measure the ability of the
host to receive or send packets, but rather measures the ability
of a given socket or other TCP/IP stack interface to send or
receive packets.
This is different from network simulation applications such as
BANEGEN, in that NetCPS is providing accurate results. Simulation
applications run an application on the host computer and then use
the measured throughput as an input to a network simulation
applying the network simulation rules to those results.
NetCPS measures the true communication capabilities of a TCP/IP
stack.
NetCPS is not intended to be a general purpose tool for
networking or transport simulation, although it might find this use
in some corner case. It was designed with simulations of a large
hosting application in mind, such as web hosting.
