The Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino will soon open in Las Vegas, drastically changing the landscape of the Las Vegas Strip. The Planet Hollywood group has paid the winning price for the Aladdin purchase, 45 days after it was chosen as the bidder for the Stocking Horse for the Aladdin Resort and Casino.

The joint venture partnership to buy the property includes Robert Earl, founder and CEO of Planet Hollywood International, Inc., Bay Harbour Management LC, and Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc. The purchase contract for the 2,567-room hotel, 114,000-square-foot casino, and 7,000-seat Theatre of Performing Arts is $635 million and includes assumptions about debt. The new $90 million capital investment will be used for property renovations and property clearing.

Once the renovation is complete, the new resort will be known as the Sheraton Hotel "Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino." With The Streep's new look, improved driveway, and a fully updated dining and entertainment strategy, the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino will offer visitors and locals a chance to get a real taste of Hollywood. The casino floor has also been completely renovated, inviting everything with a more open and unique Hollywood theme.

"The plan for the Planet Hollywood hotel and casino in Las Vegas has been years in the making," said Robert Earle. "I'm excited to be able to team up and plan to make it happen in this amazing place. It's time, the Planet Hollywood brand is on the rise again, and there's no better place here than Las Vegas to start our hotel and casino business."

The joint venture appointed Mike Mecca as its chairman and CEO. Mr. Mecca, formerly the general manager of Green Valley Ranch Casino and Spa, joined the group in May. "We are delighted to have such a skilled operator on our team," said Doug Teitelbaum, principal of Bay Harbor Management LC. "Mike is exactly what we have been looking for in chief executive officer." Teitelbaum also confirmed that the joint venture will retain all of its Aladdin employees.

This Hollywood theme will be reflected in the hotel's new guest room and suite design. This special suite, taken from Planet Hollywood's extensive collection of memorabilia, the world's largest, will be a completely unique element of this new design. The top floor of the hotel will reflect the lives and careers of the most beloved movie stars, with its suite floors. The next floor will focus on film; the special suite on this floor will be themed with memorabilia from the highest-grossing films. Plans also require major headline acts to tour the theater. The theater will also be home to weekly Hollywood-style movie releases.

Starwood only manages hotel operations through the Sheraton brand and is not responsible for casino operations. Starwood will appoint key executives to run the hotel and introduce a well-known global reservation system and award-winning Starwood Preferred Guest program into the property. The parties also plan to develop a Westin Vacation Resort with up to 600 units at Starwood's property through the Starwood Vacation Ownership Department. The purchase does not include the adjacent Desert Passage Mall, which is owned by Aladdin Bazaar, LLC.

Under the contract, Aladdin Resorts & Casino will continue to operate as Aladdin for a period of time. During that time, the building will gradually be converted into Planet Hollywood hotels and casinos, and the existing building will be extensively renovated.
